Re-Cover is headed and project managed by an experienced Occupation Therapist (OT) who has worked as a decorator. With this experience in both areas she can effectively manage the practical side of the project as well as provide individual clinical support. The small scale of the project allows for this support to be readily available and be personalised according to individual needs. When asked about her own view of her job she said:
With time, as the commitment and skills of the participants develop, they take on more responsibilities and provide an increasingly leading role in the project. They adopt roles such as mentoring new staff, liaising with customers and estimating new work.
Re-Cover helps its employees regain their identity as workers in society. Ideally the next step is to move on to regular employment, however we recognise that for some this is a much bigger step than for others and there is no set time frame or unrealistic expectations
Re-Cover’s employees work an average of 4 hours a day for three days a week, earning £8. – per hour. They do this within the Department of Work and Pensions’ (DWP) permitted work scheme, which enables them to retain their benefits. They are thus able to try out and get used to being part of a working environment again without the added stress of this important safety net being taken away from them.
Quotes from the participants are provided below to demonstrate their experience of working in the team:
